Hon. Living Mitin Urges Compensation Before Divestment: CEHRD Representatives Visit
Hon. Living Ebibaekebena Mitin, the member representing Ekeremor Constituency II and Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, recently welcomed representatives from the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) to discuss the ongoing divestments by multi-national oil companies operating in the Niger Delta, especially in Bayelsa State.
CEHRD, a non-governmental organization founded by conservationists, environmentalists, activists, and health workers in the Niger Delta, aims to address the environmental, human rights, rural health, and underdevelopment challenges in the region.
During the courtesy visit, the CEHRD representatives sought information on the actions taken by the state government and the House Committee on Environment regarding the divestments. In response, Hon. Mitin expressed gratitude for their interest and highlighted the state government’s efforts in addressing the issue. He also emphasized the need for adequate compensation for the Niger Delta people before any further divestments occur.
Hon. Mitin stated, “Divestment as mentioned today is not about benefiting our people. Multinational oil companies have caused significant issues in the region, and it is crucial that they adequately compensate our people before discussing divestment.”
He further mentioned that the House of Assembly has called on the government to take legal action against multinational oil companies operating in the state. Additionally, they have urged the National Assembly members to press the presidency to address the issue of divestment.
The CEHRD representatives thanked Hon. Mitin for his insights and pledged their support for the committee and the state government on matters concerning environmental justice.
