20-year-old bread seller docked before an Akure Magistrate’s Court over an alleged debt

Yemisi Odunayo, a 20-year-old bread seller, appeared in an Akure Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for an alleged debt.
In July 2022, the defendant committed the crime at Iloro Market, Oke Aro axis in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
According to Taiwo Oniyere, the police prosecutor, the defendant deceived Toyin Johnbull three times and obtained bread worth N168,000 with the promise of remitting the money as soon as she sold it, but she reneged.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant converted the money for her own use after failing to comply with her agreement to remit the money after the sales.
Odunayo, who was charged with a single count, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The offence committed is against the law and is punishable by a fine, according to Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The prosecutor’s request for an adjournment was met with opposition from the defendant’s attorney, O.l. Abu, who asked the magistrate to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms possible.
The defendant was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the same amount by the Magistrate.
The Magistrate granted bail based on the fact that the defendant’s husband could stand in with documentation of his business operations within the jurisdiction of the court.
