Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports

Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has urged Nigerians not to be used as political pawns in the upcoming general elections in 2023, but rather to vote for people who will move the country forward and unite all.

He also urged Nigerians to remain united in the face of adversity and to fight for a united Nigeria before and after the 2023 elections.

General Babangida, speaking with journalists at his Minna residence yesterday, urged politicians and voters to always prioritize national interests over personal interests.

He urged young people in particular to read history in order to appreciate the contributions made by individuals to keep Nigeria together, particularly after the civil war.

“I encourage younger Nigerians to learn more about the country’s history in order to understand what happened in the past and how we came to be as a country.”

“What happened, what roles did different people play, and how did they all come together?” “Once you understand the history of the country and the efforts of our founding fathers, you have a roadmap that you must follow,” he added.

Concerning the 2023 general election, he stated, “Nigerians must remain confident, optimistic, and focused in order to avoid being used as political ponds.”

“During the electioneering campaign and the election itself, all stakeholders must maintain peace,” he declared.

He stated that he wants Nigeria to remain a strong and united country with prosperity and people living in peace with one another.

In his assessment of Nigeria 62 years after independence, he stated, “So far so good, first of all, we went into a civil war which was turbulent, but we were able to come out of it quite and successfully in the sense that the country remains one.”

Following that, General Babangida stated that successive Nigerian governments, both military and civilian, have all worked to keep the country united, stating that “so far, we are still a united country, and we should remain more united.”
