2023: LP Disowns Purported Appointment into Presidential Campaign Council

By Adeleye Kunle
The Labour Party (LP) announced yesterday that no one has been appointed to the Imo State Presidential Campaign Council.
The declaration followed a report that one Dr. Fabian Ihekweme had been appointed to the Imo Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council by Professor Pat Utomi at the banquet hall of the Immaculate Royal Hotel on Port Harcourt Road in Owerri.
However, in a statement issued by the LP National Organising Secretary, Chief Clement Ojukwu, and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the party stated that only the National Working Committee (NWC) could make campaign council appointments.
“It is undeniable that the Labour Party has not appointed or inaugurated any presidential campaign council, national or otherwise,” Ojukwu stated.
“All campaign council appointments are the sole responsibility of the Labour Party National Working Committee, led by National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, with announcements made by the National Publicity Secretary as directed by the National Chairman.”
“For emphasis and clarity, the Labour Party constitution states in Article 14 subsection 1(a):
“The National Chairman shall provide leadership to the party and preside over all meetings of the party’s National Executive Council and National Working Committee.”
“And in Article 14 sub -section 9(d), it is the duties of the National Organising Secretary to organise campaigns and related issues thereof.
“The power of all appointments and leadership was vested in the person and office of the National Chairman through the National Working Committee or National Executive Council under the above-mentioned constitutional provision” (NEC)
“The LP now takes this opportunity to issue a final warning to all support groups and individuals that the LP is guided by the constitution in all of its activities, and as such, all members of the party as well as interested members of the public who are currently in the LP should desist from any hasty dealings and exercise extreme caution.”
“With regard to the 2023 general elections, people must obey the Labour Party constitution and follow party directives.”
