The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed grave concern over escalating political tensions in Rivers State following the decision by the State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor. The socio-political body warned that the situation, if not carefully managed, could threaten peace, stability, and governance in one of Nigeria’s most strategic states.
In a press statement issued by its Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee, PANDEF described the development as deeply disturbing and called for urgent steps to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The group emphasized that Rivers State occupies a central position in the Niger Delta and plays a critical role in Nigeria’s socio-political stability and economic wellbeing, particularly given its importance to the oil and gas sector.
PANDEF noted that the impeachment move represents a dangerous escalation in the ongoing political crisis in the state. It warned that prolonged instability could have far-reaching consequences, not only for Rivers State but also for the wider South-South region and the country at large. According to the group, the situation demands restraint, dialogue, and a renewed commitment to peaceful resolution by all parties involved.
Reaffirming its non-partisan stance, PANDEF called on political actors in Rivers State to set aside personal and partisan interests in favor of peace and development. The forum urged all stakeholders to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and mutual forbearance, stressing that governance should remain focused on the welfare of the people rather than political confrontation.
The group appealed to political leaders to prioritize good governance and economic development, noting that continued instability could negatively affect residents of the state, other citizens of the South-South zone, Nigerians nationwide, and the expatriate community living and working in Rivers State. PANDEF stressed that peace is a prerequisite for sustainable development and investor confidence in the region.
PANDEF also acknowledged and commended previous and ongoing efforts to restore calm in Rivers State. It praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, respected elders of the state, and other concerned Nigerians for their interventions aimed at de-escalating tensions and fostering reconciliation among the political actors.
In line with its long-standing role in peace-building across the Niger Delta, PANDEF announced the formation of a high-level reconciliation committee to intervene in the crisis. The committee is chaired by Chief Kanu Agabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney-General of the Federation, who is expected to bring his extensive legal and political experience to the process.
Other members of the committee include former Senator for Edo North, Senator Obende Domingo, who will serve as Vice Chairman, and Rt. Hon. Chief Essien Nduese, a former Minister of Housing. The team also includes Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, a retired federal permanent secretary, and Chief Mike Ejiofor, a retired director of the Department of State Services.
Mrs. Nella Rabana-Andem, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney-General of Cross River State, is also part of the committee. Prince Godwin Okotie, the Deputy National Secretary of PANDEF, will serve as the secretary of the reconciliation team. PANDEF described the committee members as eminent Nigerians with proven records of integrity, experience, and commitment to public service.
The forum called on all parties involved in the Rivers State political crisis to fully cooperate with the committee. It said the team has been tasked with facilitating a peaceful, fair, and sustainable resolution through an inclusive and dispassionate process aimed at restoring stability and trust among stakeholders.
The statement was jointly endorsed by King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass and Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, former Akwa Ibom State Governor Obong Victor Attah, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the Board, and Ambassador Godknows Boladei Igali, the National Chairman of PANDEF.
