The Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has told officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces that they represent the best of the country and that failure is not an option in their duty to safeguard national security. He made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Regimental Dinner and Awards Night.
Musa described the military as Nigeria’s enduring shield, stressing that the nation places immense trust in its armed forces. He said their role in defending the country and maintaining stability remains critical at a time of evolving security challenges.
According to the defence minister, the strength of the Armed Forces lies in their diversity and unity of purpose. He noted that personnel drawn from different backgrounds continue to work together with a shared commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Musa urged the troops to continue upholding discipline, loyalty, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties. He emphasised that respect for human rights must remain central to military operations, adding that these values are essential for maintaining public trust.
He told the gathering that Nigerians see the armed forces as a symbol of hope and resilience. He emphasized that the country has confidence in the military’s ability to overcome challenges and maintain peace throughout the nation.
The minister commended troops deployed across various parts of the country, as well as those serving on external missions. He praised their courage, vigilance, and sacrifice, noting that the peace enjoyed by Nigerians is a result of their relentless efforts.
Musa said the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day goes beyond ceremony. He described it as a solemn occasion to honour fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in the service of the nation.
He added that the event also serves as a celebration of serving personnel whose dedication and professionalism continue to define the Nigerian Armed Forces. According to him, their contributions remain invaluable to national stability.
The defence minister assured the military of the Federal Government’s continued support. He stated that the government remains committed to enhancing operational capacity, logistics, and the welfare of personnel.
Musa stressed that President Bola Tinubu is resolute in his support for the armed forces. He said the administration remains focused on strengthening security architecture and ensuring that troops are adequately equipped and motivated.
He also paid tribute to the families of fallen soldiers. He described them as silent pillars of national sacrifice and assured them that the nation would never forget the sacrifices of their loved ones.
Musa further commended President Tinubu for his leadership and renewed emphasis on security. He also praised the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs for enhancing joint operations and professionalism within the military.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said the regimental dinner provided an important platform to reinforce the core values of discipline, honour, and unity that define the armed forces.
Oluyede said the tradition serves as a reminder of the military’s rich heritage. He added that it also reaffirms the collective resolve of the armed forces to remain steadfast in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
The defence chief emphasised the military’s commitment to professionalism and ethical conduct. He said adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights are essential to sustaining operational legitimacy.
According to Oluyede, these principles will continue to guide military operations as troops confront complex and evolving security threats across the country. He noted that ethical conduct remains central to effective military engagement.
The event also featured the presentation of the Command Medal of Honour to deserving officers. The awards were given in recognition of gallantry, meritorious service, and dedication to duty.
The regimental dinner formed part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. The commemoration is expected to conclude on Thursday with the laying of wreaths across the country in honour of fallen heroes.
