The Edo State Government has confirmed the arrest of the General Overseer of Rollo Life of Christ Brethren Ministry, Bishop Gideon Osazee, over allegations of sexual abuse involving two biological sisters who are minors.
The arrest followed complaints made against the cleric, which authorities say raise serious concerns about the safety of children within religious environments.
Government sources disclosed that the two complainants are aged 13 and 17. The allegations against the cleric have drawn widespread attention due to the age of the victims and the position of authority allegedly occupied by the suspect within the church.
Officials also revealed that the case may not be limited to the two sisters. According to information made available by authorities, four other young females have reportedly come forward with similar claims against Bishop Osazee, further deepening concerns surrounding the matter.
The Edo State Government said the arrest was carried out after days of surveillance aimed at ensuring that the suspect did not evade law enforcement. Officials involved in the operation stated that careful planning was required before taking the cleric into custody.
Authorities noted that the decision to monitor the suspect before the arrest was based on intelligence reports. The approach, they said, was necessary to secure a successful operation and prevent any possible interference with the investigation.
The development has generated strong public reactions, with many residents and advocacy groups calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. Concerns have been raised about the vulnerability of minors in religious spaces and the need for accountability among leaders.
Speaking on the matter, the Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugene Abdullah, confirmed that additional children linked to the church had reported disturbing experiences. He stated that the ministry received complaints that pointed to alleged sexual harassment connected to the suspect.
According to the commissioner, the reports were taken seriously due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and the ages of those involved. He emphasized that the state government is committed to protecting children and ensuring that justice is served.
Further comments came from Faith Edebor of the Vivian Sexual Assault Referral Centre, who said preliminary findings by investigators had corroborated key elements of the victims’ accounts. She explained that while investigations are still ongoing, early evidence appears to support aspects of the claims made.
Edebor noted that professionals involved in the case are working carefully to ensure that all procedures are followed. She added that the welfare of the alleged victims remains a priority as investigations continue.
Despite the allegations, Bishop Osazee has denied any wrongdoing. He claimed that he had no sexual involvement with minors and maintained that his only relationship was a consensual one with the older of the two sisters.
Authorities, however, said such claims would be examined alongside statements from complainants and other available evidence. Investigators stressed that all parties involved would be allowed to present their accounts.
The Edo State Government confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing. Officials said statements and evidence are still being collected from victims, witnesses, and other relevant individuals connected to the church.
Law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation stated that the process would be conducted professionally and without bias. They added that the outcome would be based strictly on facts established during the investigation.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding minors and vulnerable persons. Officials emphasized that anyone found culpable, regardless of status or position, would face the full weight of the law.
The case has reignited broader discussions on child protection, abuse prevention, and accountability within religious institutions. Advocacy groups have renewed calls for stronger safeguards and more oversight to protect minors.
As the investigation progresses, authorities have urged the public to allow due process to take its course. They also encouraged victims of abuse to come forward and report their experiences through appropriate channels.
The arrest of the cleric marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to address allegations of abuse involving minors. The Edo State Government said it remains resolute in its stance against all forms of violence and exploitation affecting children.
