The African Union Sports Council has appointed former Nigerian international footballer Samson Siasia as its ambassador. The appointment was made on February 19, 2026, at international press conference in Abuja.

Samson Siasia, born on August 14, 1967, is a former professional football striker who represented Nigeria at the international level. During his playing career, he gained recognition for his performances and contributions to Nigerian football.
Following his retirement as a player, Siasia transitioned into coaching. He was appointed head coach of the Nigeria national team in 2010.
He served in that capacity until October 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw the team’s participation in major competitions and international fixtures.
In 2016, Siasia was reappointed as head coach of the Nigeria national team, marking a return to the leadership of the Super Eagles. His reappointment underscored his continued relevance in Nigerian football administration and technical development.
At the Abuja press conference, Siasia expressed appreciation for the recognition. He thanked the African Union Sports Council for entrusting him with the ambassadorial responsibility and pledged to support programs that promote sports development across the region.
