Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has forwarded the name of Dr. Peter Akpe to the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new Deputy Governor of the state. The nomination follows the sudden death of the former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The governor transmitted Dr. Akpe’s name to the Assembly in line with constitutional provisions that require legislative approval for the appointment of a deputy governor when a vacancy occurs. Lawmakers are expected to begin the screening process shortly.

The position became vacant after the unexpected passing of Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who had served alongside Governor Diri. His death created the need for a replacement to ensure continuity in governance within the state.

Dr. Peter Akpe currently serves as Chief of Staff at the Bayelsa State Government House. He is regarded as a key member of Governor Diri’s inner circle and has played a significant role in coordinating government activities.

Before his current appointment, Dr. Akpe served as Deputy Chief of Staff during Governor Diri’s first tenure. In that capacity, he was involved in administrative coordination and policy implementation within the Government House.

Dr. Akpe also has legislative experience. He previously served as a member and leader in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly during the tenure of former Governor Seriake Dickson. His time in the Assembly is considered an important part of his political career.

Under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), a governor is required to nominate a replacement deputy governor when a vacancy arises. The nominee must be screened and confirmed by a majority of members of the State House of Assembly.

The Bayelsa Assembly is expected to examine Dr. Akpe’s credentials, qualifications, and record of public service. The screening will also provide lawmakers the opportunity to assess his vision and readiness for the role.

If confirmed, Dr. Akpe will be sworn in as Deputy Governor and will serve alongside Governor Diri to continue the administration’s policies and programs. The appointment is seen as critical to maintaining stability within the state government.

The late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo had been an active participant in the administration before his death. His passing was described by many stakeholders as a major loss to Bayelsa State.

Governor Diri has not publicly provided detailed comments on the nomination beyond the formal communication to the Assembly. However, the choice of Dr. Akpe is widely viewed as a move to ensure continuity and preserve institutional experience within the government.
