Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called on politicians across Nigeria to avoid bitterness and division, urging them instead to embrace unity in order to advance national development. He made the appeal during events in Delta State where political leaders gathered to pay tribute to former Delta North Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue.
The governor stressed that political disagreements should not degenerate into personal animosity, noting that cooperation among leaders is essential for progress. He said Nigeria’s growth depends largely on the ability of its political class to work together despite party differences.
Oborevwori spoke as prominent figures in Delta State and beyond bid farewell to Nwaoboshi, describing him as a dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to the state and the nation. The event drew a large number of political stakeholders, including former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, former Governor James Ibori, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Emomotimi Guwor, and Senator Ned Nwoko, among others.
The governor noted that the late Nwaoboshi played an important role in the political development of Delta State. He said the former senator was known for his commitment to his constituents and his active participation in legislative matters at the national level.
Oborevwori emphasized that leaders must focus on service rather than personal rivalries. He urged politicians to see elections as contests of ideas rather than battles that create long-term divisions. According to him, bitterness among political actors slows down governance and hinders development.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa also paid tribute to Nwaoboshi, describing him as a courageous and outspoken leader. Okowa said the late senator contributed meaningfully to the growth of Delta State and remained committed to the welfare of his people throughout his time in office.
James Ibori, who also served as governor of Delta State, reflected on Nwaoboshi’s political journey. He noted that the former lawmaker was steadfast in his convictions and worked diligently in advancing the interests of his constituency.
Peter Obi, who attended the ceremony, commiserated with the people of Delta State over the loss. He highlighted the importance of national unity and urged leaders at all levels to prioritize the common good.
Speaker Emomotimi Guwor described Nwaoboshi as a man who believed in democratic values. He said the late senator’s contributions to legislative debates and constituency development would not be forgotten.
Senator Ned Nwoko also joined other dignitaries in honoring Nwaoboshi’s legacy. He acknowledged the former senator’s role in shaping political discourse in Delta North and beyond.
The gathering served as a moment of reflection for political leaders in the state. Many speakers stressed the need for unity and collaboration, especially at a time when the country faces economic and social challenges.
In a related development, Delta State also mourned the passing of former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue, who died at the age of 85. Elue served as deputy governor during the administration of former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Governor Oborevwori described Elue as an experienced administrator who contributed to the stability and growth of Delta State. He said the late deputy governor’s years of service left a lasting impact on governance in the state.
Political associates and community leaders remembered Elue as a calm and disciplined leader. They noted that his tenure in office was marked by efforts to strengthen institutions and promote development initiatives.
The deaths of both Nwaoboshi and Elue have prompted an outpouring of tributes from across political lines. Leaders have called on younger politicians to learn from their dedication and commitment to public service.
As Delta State reflects on the contributions of the two late statesmen, Governor Oborevwori reiterated his call for politicians to rise above bitterness. He maintained that unity, mutual respect, and a focus on development are necessary to move Nigeria forward.
He concluded that while political competition is inevitable in a democracy, it must be guided by principles of fairness and respect. According to him, only through collective effort can meaningful progress be achieved for the benefit of all citizens.
