NLC and TUC urged to save Lagos LP

THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, have been urged to restore normalcy in the Labour Party, LP, in Lagos State ahead of the 2023 general elections.

According to Tony Masha, the party’s Vice Chairman in Lagos, the LP, which was formed by the two Labour Centres as the last hope to unscrupulous individuals.

“We began to reorganize the Labour Party in Lagos state in 2018, and we have been meeting at the NLC office in Yaba, the Secretariat of the Labour Party in Lagos state, mobilizing members, and inaugurating Local Government Areas Executive Committees elected by members themselves,” according to the statement.

“However, since the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in May 2022, the Labour Party has been attracting all manner of people, some of whom joined the party for ulterior motives, such as the intention to demobilize and demoralize rank and file members of the party and, as a result, disorganize the party in Lagos State.”

“Since election campaigns have begun, it is imperative for the NLC and TUC to work with the LP’s National Working Committee to ensure that a democratic and inclusive Caretaker Committee is established to steer the affairs of the Labour Party in Lagos state until the party’s Congress is held, especially since the tenure of the illegally imposed Caretaker has expired since August 18th, 2022.”

Under no circumstances should an individual be permitted to undermine the democratic structures already in place in the State’s Local Government Areas and Wards by dismantling such democratically elected Party leaders at those layers in order to handpick his friends and relatives to replace them.

“As a result, we urge our thronging members and the general public to disregard a social media statement circulating that individuals will be unveiled to replace democratically elected party leaders at the Local Government Areas and Wards, as this is an aberration.”
