NUT decries effect of insurgency, banditry on basic education in Niger State

By Adeleye Kunle
The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Niger State, has decried the level of damage the activities of kidnappers, insurgents and bandits have inflicted on the educational system and lives of thousands of children in seven local governments in the state.
The state NUT Chairman, Akayago Adamu Mohammed stated this at the occasion of the 2022 World Teachers Day Celebration in Minna,
Mohammed listed the worst affected LGs in the state to include Rafi, Shiroro, Mashegu, Paikoro, Munya, Mariga, and Rijau areas.
He explained that the awful development has adversely affected the desired delivery of quality education in the school system.
The state NUT Chairman, however, lamented the continuous closure of schools affected by the security challenges, saying, it is impacting negatively on the pupils and students of the concerned schools and threatening the desired peace in society.
He said,” consequently, we call on the state government to as a matter of serious concern provide viable and safe alternative means towards ensuring the resumption of normal academic activities in the affected schools”.
Mohammed also called on the state government to urgently ensure salaries of teachers are paid and the balance of ten months’ arrears of salary cuts also paid in earnest
