Bayelsa PDP chieftains, Hon. Obuebite cancels birthday celebration, holds prayers session for flood victims
Commend Governor Diri for alleviating the pains of his people
A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and immediate past Commissioner for Education, Hon. Jonathan Robinson Obuebite, PhD has cancelled the celebration of his birthday anniversary declaring rather to use the occasion to empathize and pray for the State and the victims of the flood disaster particularly families of those who lost loved ones.
Hon. Obuebite, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, noted that his birthday this year would not be a period of merry-making but one that is needed for prayers and sober reflection because of the damages to over 300 communities, farmlands and businesses in the state.
According to him, though he had, reached out to so many persons by direct cash transfer, he also through his dear wife, assisted victims with food items and cash across his constituents, Local Government and State, it is his humble way of supporting the Governor and Government in ameliorating the suffering of flood victims in the state.
He said “We have lost promising souls. People have lost their means of livelihood. Many landlords have been turned into refugees at Internally Displaced Person Camps located across the state by the Governor Douye Diri-led Prosperity administration. There is a need to empathise with other victims because we have our friends and relations among them.”
“Throwing birthday parties during this period is as good as mocking the victims. I will never do that. Aside from being a Christian, I was not brought up that way. The Bible teaches us that we should rejoice with those who are rejoicing and mourn with those who are mourning. The only special gift I have and have presented to the victims is a prayer session that was held at the chapel in my Compound.”
The former Chief Whip also used the occasion to thank the Governor for the cash and relief material he sent to Okoroma and Oluasiri communities in Nembe Local Government Area. Saying it will go a long way to cushion the devastating effect of flood on his people.
What is needed most during this period is prayers and support for our people and we have done that. The time will come for celebration but this is not the best time.
