2023: Umahi’s Bans Political Rallies in Schools, Limits Okada Movement in Ebonyi
Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports
In preparation for the 2023 general election, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has banned all forms of political rallies in all of the state’s primary and secondary schools beginning November 1, 2022.
According to TrackNews Nigeria, Umahi stated that the ban affects all political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, political parties must obtain permission from the Commissioner of Education before holding any such rally in any school space.
Umahi, who announced the ban yesterday in Abakaliki during the state citizens’ input for the 2023 budget estimate, explained that the ban was prompted by reports that people destroy school facilities during such rallies by defecating and engaging in other filthy activities.
The governor also restricted the movement of motorbikes known as Okada in the state from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., citing efforts to protect citizens’ lives and property.
He went on to say that the move was necessary because criminals are known to use motorcycles to commit crimes.
“The Attorney-General will issue an executive order prohibiting motorcycles from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. in every part of the state,” Umahi said. If you want to use it, you must do so before 7 p.m. We must go to any length to ensure your safety.
“When we make difficult decisions, it is because we have no choice.” Government’s primary responsibility is to protect lives and property, so you must make sacrifices to do so.
“No rallies in schools, whether primary or secondary, beginning November 1, 2022.” If you must hold rallies there, you must apply to the Commissioner of Education for permission, because who will clean up after you have messed it up with feces and other dearths?
“So, regardless of the party, if you apply, you must put money down for the cleaning after the rally,” the governor added.
