Oby Ezekwesili Charges Nigerians and Others in Fight Against Monopolistic Democracy
Oby Ezekwesili, former Vice President of the World Bank (Africa), has issued a call to Nigerians and other African countries to fight the monopolistic style of democracy.
According to Track News, the former Minister of Education stated that the phenomenon of monopolistic democracy exists in Nigeria and some African countries.
Ezekwesili noted that the people have caused the political class to adopt that style of democracy because they are apathetic and show little concern about issues pertaining to political engagement.
The activist who gave the charge at the inauguration of the Office Of The Citizen (OOTC) by #FixPolitics stated that there has been a phenomenal shift in political engagement.
She urged citizens to actively participate in governance, noting that it is the only way out of the monopolistic democracy trend, which is similar to a marketplace monopoly.
“We have monopolistic democracy because we have citizens who cannot engage,” she claims.
“What we are doing today is emphasizing the level of citizen engagement that is required to transform democracy from a monopoly to a truly competitive system.”
“Better governance results from a competitive democracy.” We now understand that without good governance, we will fail.”
