A passenger killed in a boat mishap in Lagos.

A 32-year-old man was killed in a boat mishap at a jetty in the Lagos State community of Badagry.
The mishap occurred at the jetty on Thursday night when two boats, one from Badagry and the other from Lagos, collided.
Mr Victor Idowu, a community resident, told reporters in Badagry on Friday that the incident occurred at 10:05 p.m. at an Akarakumo jetty.
“The sound and voice of the boatmen awoke the residents of the community, who came out to see what had happened.
“One of the passengers was crushed by the boat and fell into the water; residents and the boatman assisted in pulling him out.
“We discovered he had been injured in the chest when we pulled him out of the lagoon.
“While some suggested taking him to private hospitals, I told them General Hospital was the best option,” he explained.
Idowu claimed that there was no doctor available to treat the victim when they arrived at the hospital.
According to him, the victim received first aid and was in pain until 4:10 a.m., when he was taken away for an X-ray.
“He immediately gave up the ghost when he returned from the x-ray,” he explained.
Dr Olatunde Bakare, Medical Director of Badagry General Hospital, told NAN that the man was brought to the hospital in the middle of the night with a serious chest injury.
“His two ribs had been broken. We wanted to refer him to another hospital in Lagos because we couldn’t handle his case.
“But we realized that if we sent him to Lagos at that time, he might not make it half way before dying.
“So we needed to stabilize him, so they did an X-ray on him this morning.
“Due to the seriousness of the injury, he died as he was coming out,” he explained.
The man was properly attended to by hospital staff, according to Bakare, but his injury was fatal, resulting in his death.
