It is no longer news that the issue of winning 25 percent in the federal capital territory is currently being debated at the presidential election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu failed to secure 25 percent of votes in the FCT despite scoring the majority votes in the elections.

Speaking on the issue, Former Attorney General of the Federation Michael Aondoakaa has given his own interpretation of the provision.

Aondoakaa while speaking to Arise TV an an exclusive interview, refers Nigerians to other sections of the constitution.

According to him, in order to get the right interpretation, one needs to look at other sections and how they are being interpreted.

He said if we are to look at FCT as a state, then it must be given the same treatment as the Governorship election.

Hear him “If you say the FCT is a state, then the issue of winning 2/3 as specified in the governorship election will arise. But I don’t think that’s the import of the constitution. So much has been said and repeated about this I just drew the attention of other sections of the constitution that can give more light because the interpretation rules gives relevance to other section of the constitution for clarity. And I said you should read the whole documents as a whole. Section 299 appears to be more consonant with the administrative procedure which gives the federal capital the power to the president to administer as if he is a governor and the national assembly as if it is a state assembly to make law for the federal capital.
