Niger records over 1,300 cases of gender-based violence in three years
The Gender and Domestic Violence Department of the Ministry of Justice, Niger State, has lamented the rising cases of gender-based violence, saying within three years of setting up the department over 1,300 cases were recorded.
The Director of the department, Bar. Mairo Mohammed Man made the disclosure in Minna.
She said, “gender-based violence is on the increase. My department, since it was established in 2020, has handled over 1,000 domestic violence cases. We need all relevant agencies to synergize and tackle it in the state”.
The legal practitioner, however, explained that there were other cases of gender-based violence being perpetrated in the state that were not being reported to the development.
Man insisted that the department was not relenting and would do all that was necessary to ensure any person found culpable faced the full wrath of the law.
She revealed that gender violence emanates from disagreements between spouses, house maintenance crises, and family interference, among others.
According to her, “and no stone would be left unturned in the fight against the menace. The department will do all that is necessary to ensure any person found culpable faces the full wrath of the law”.
She further called on stakeholders to support the department in its efforts to win the fight against gender-based violence and its harmful effects on many homes in the state.
