New political findings unveiled over upcoming Edo governorship election

In a recent Eagle Badger poll, it has been revealed thatsubstantial 78% of registered voters in Edo State support the zoning and rotation of the governorship across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Conducted on January 5, the poll offers essential insights into voter sentiments as the 2024 governorship election draws near.

The majority of respondents, 73%, advocate for political parties to zone their governorship tickets to Edo Central, while 16% favour Edo South and 11% lean towards Edo North.

The primary reasons behind supporting zoning are a demand for equity, fairness, and justice in political representation, emphasizing inclusiveness in decision-making.

Conversely, those against zoning argue that competence and merit should be the primary criteria for selecting the governor, highlighting a division in opinions regarding the most suitable leadership qualities.

A pressing concern across all three senatorial districts is the state of roads. ‘

Respondents acknowledge that many inter-town highways fall under federal government jurisdiction but believe the state government should intervene due to the direct impact on residents, economic hardships, and rising insecurity.

The poll also indicates a significant level of scepticism among respondents regarding the fairness of the upcoming election, with dissatisfaction stemming from the 2023 General Elections.

This raises concerns and emphasizes the need for political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rebuild trust in the electoral process.

Despite doubts about the election’s fairness, respondents show a high intention to vote, with over 90% having collected their Permanent Voters Cards.

Notable aspirants gaining awareness across political parties include Dr. Asue Ighodalo in the PDP, Pastor Ize Iyamu in the APC, and Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon in the Labour Party.

The Edo Governorship Election is officially scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
