Respect the dead or risk facing the consequences-MoWAG to Ghanaians
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MoWAG) has issued a warning about the serious implications of mishandling the dead during burial.
According to MoWAG, such actions carry significant legal and health consequences.
Richard Kofi Jordan, the General Secretary of MoWAG, made this statement in response to reports of improper handling of a corpse by some young people in Asante Akyem, Ashanti Region.
He described the behavior as grossly disrespectful to the deceased and emphasized the need for people to show respect for the dead.

Mr. Jordan elaborated on the issue during an interview on the Ghana Yensom Morning Show, hosted by Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Apea-Apreku on Accra 100.5 FM, on Monday, July 1, 2024. He explained that the actions of the youth not only have legal implications but also pose health risks to the community as well as the mourners.
He pointed out that, in some cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) is unable to determine the cause of death.
In such situations, the mishandling of a corpse can have serious health consequences.
Mr. Jordan detailed that the youth dressed the corpse in a pullover, hood, and combat gear, which he considered a grave disrespect to the deceased.
Mr. Jordan, who also serves as a Board Member of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, revealed that if a family member decides to take legal action, the youth involved in the incident in Asante Akyem could face serious repercussions.
He emphasized that if the family is unhappy with the actions of the youth and lodges a complaint with the police, the law can take its course.
