JUST-IN: Philip Shaibu Reacts As Court Void PDP Primary In Edo
Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu, has welcomed the Federal High Court’s decision to invalidate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s governorship primary election held on February 22, 2024. Reacting to Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo’s ruling, Shaibu expressed satisfaction, stating that the purported primary election at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City was devoid of legal credibility, likening it to a mere ceremonial gathering.
Shaibu criticized the PDP for what he described as undermining internal democracy, alleging fraudulent conduct during the primary election process. He emphasized that the delegates who supported him in a parallel primary were the legitimate representatives elected by the people to nominate the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate.
Addressing speculation about his potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Shaibu defended such moves as part of democratic processes aimed at expanding party influence and enhancing electoral prospects. He contrasted this with what he portrayed as the PDP’s exclusionary tactics, suggesting they were aimed at manipulating election outcomes rather than fostering democratic participation.
Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo’s ruling invalidated the February 22 PDP primary election due to the exclusion of 378 delegates who were unlawfully prevented from participating. This development has sparked significant discussions in Edo State’s political landscape, underscoring ongoing debates about fair electoral practices and the importance of internal party democracy in Nigerian politics.
As stakeholders await further developments, Shaibu’s remarks highlight broader concerns about transparency and fairness in political party operations ahead of the upcoming governorship election. His stance underscores the imperative for parties to uphold democratic principles and ensure inclusivity in their electoral processes.
