RIVERS POLITICAL CRISIS: The End of Wike Era

Published

on

Rivers State, the heartbeat of Niger Delta has been thrown into a wave of chronic political battleground, occasioned by the insatiable power-appetite of a former governor of the state whose overwhelming overbearance and overindulgence has been widely condemned and rejected by Rivers people of good conscience.

Dismayed by his inability to do a third term by proxy, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has been fighting like a wounded lion, masterminding the infamous October 30 impeachment plot along with other sinister agenda against the sitting governor. But it’s now a year into the political battle and the costly mistakes made by the Wike camp in the defection of Martins Amaewhule and 26 others will continue to hunt them as they keep pursuing this lost battle.

Without doubt, Wike has lost the game following the successful conduct and conclusion of the October 5 LG polls in Rivers State. But in order to appear relevant to Mr president and to hoedwink the few supporters left, Wike is now shopping for court judgments and exparte orders like a pregnant woman in search of strange foods to quench her psychological appetite.

The recently delivered judgment by the Appeal Court is one of such deceptive antics to hold his blind supporters down with elusive hope. In fact, that case is among the ones Mr President advised the Wike faction to withdraw, but as a man who lacks respect for elders, Wike proceeded with the case. Laughable as it may be, Amaewhule was a lawmaker when the case was filed, but not anymore following the defection from PDP, to APC on December 11, 2023.

As it were, deception is the only instrument the detractors of Governor Siminalayi Fubara is holding unto to remain relevant in the political environment. They can lie to their supporters that they didn’t defect, but with the incontrovertible evidence on ground, they are gone. For a fact, we know they are gone and gone for good, but the concern is their sinister plot to use the scenario in causing violence and putting the state into chaos in their illegal sittings.

Funny as it may sound, these 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have disclosed to their followers of rehashing a plot to impeach the governor before the end of 2024. But what they failed to ask themselves is, “when we were lawmakers we couldn’t perfect the impeachment, is it now that we are no longer lawmakers that we’d be able to impeach the Governor?”

Time is ticking and the world is watching, but before then, maybe the governor should reclaim the Assembly quarters for it can no longer house illegitimate members who are all out to antagonise the state government.
