The Delta State House of Assembly has passed an amendment bill to rename the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, to Southern Delta University, Ozoro. The decision was made during a plenary session held in Asaba on Wednesday. The bill now awaits the assent of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to officially enact the name change.

The bill was introduced by Governor Oborevwori in a letter sent to the Assembly on Tuesday, requesting prompt legislative action. Following this, the lawmakers held the first, second, and third readings of the bill, ultimately approving it for passage.

Emeka Nwaobi, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, initiated a motion to suspend certain procedural rules, allowing for the expedited third reading and passage of the bill. The motion received support from Charles Emetulu, the representative for Ndokwa West (PDP).

Speaker Dennis Guwor (PDP-Warri South-West) conducted a voice vote on the motion, which was unanimously approved by the Assembly members. Guwor praised the lawmakers for their swift action, calling the passage a significant development for the institution.

Guwor further noted that the institution’s governing council had requested the name change to Southern Delta University, Ozoro as part of a broader plan to expand its academic offerings and establish new faculties, transitioning the university into a more comprehensive, conventional institution.
