NWC Meeting Looms Amid Tensions Over PDP National Secretary Role

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to convene its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, amid a heated leadership crisis involving the position of National Secretary.
The controversy pits Sunday Ude-Okoye against Senator Sam Anyanwu, both claiming legitimate rights to the role.
TrackNews Media reports that this dispute follows a Court of Appeal ruling in Enugu that affirmed Ude-Okoye’s nomination by the PDP’s South East Zone as a replacement for Anyanwu. Anyanwu had previously resigned to pursue the Imo State governorship election.
After losing the gubernatorial race, Anyanwu has sought to reclaim his former position, arguing that his resignation was conditional and does not render the office vacant.
He insists that his resignation was tied solely to his governorship ambition and that his claim remains valid.
Ude-Okoye, however, maintains that his nomination and the appellate court’s ruling confirm him as the rightful National Secretary.
He has reportedly garnered the support of several NWC and Board of Trustees (BoT) members, signaling potential confrontations at Wednesday’s meeting.
In a bold move, Anyanwu resumed duties at the PDP’s national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, citing legal grounds for his actions.
He referenced a pending Supreme Court appeal and an application for a stay of execution on the appellate court’s judgment.
“Filing a stay of execution effectively halts the enforcement of the judgment until the matter is resolved,” he argued, cautioning against any actions that might jeopardize the party’s unity.
This standoff has deepened divisions within the PDP, with both sides rallying support from key party leaders.
The NWC meeting on Wednesday is anticipated to address the issue, as the party grapples with internal disputes that threaten to derail its preparations for future political challenges.
