Akpabio Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations as Senate Debates Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Petition

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that he has never engaged in such misconduct. Akpoti-Uduaghan formally submitted a petition to the Senate on March 5, 2025, reiterating the claims she had previously made during a televised interview. In his defense, Akpabio emphasized his upbringing and reputation, describing himself as a gender-friendly leader.

The petition immediately sparked controversy within the Senate, as lawmakers debated whether it should be considered. Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno argued that the matter was already before a court, making it beyond the Senate’s jurisdiction. He insisted that discussing it in the chamber would violate legal principles. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also opposed an open debate on the issue, suggesting that the matter be handled privately in a closed-door session.

Despite the tensions, Akpabio continued with the Senate’s scheduled business, citing the presence of visitors in the gallery. The development adds to the growing political discord in the Senate, following an earlier dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio over the reassignment of her seat in the chamber. That controversy, which began two weeks ago, led to her referral to the Senate Ethics Committee, further intensifying the conflict.

With legal and political battles unfolding simultaneously, the allegations and the Senate’s response continue to generate public and media attention, raising questions about the handling of sensitive issues within the legislative body.
