Seven Years and Counting: Activists Demand Action for Leah Sharibu’s Release

As the world observes International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 under the theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality,” the Association of Christian Correspondents of Nigeria (ACCoN) has reiterated its demand for the release of Leah Sharibu. The group urged the Nigerian government, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to secure her freedom.
Leah Sharibu was among the 110 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018. While most of the girls were later released, Leah remains in captivity 2,575 days after her abduction. Reports suggest she was held back for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
In a statement signed by its president, Adeola Ogunlade, ACCoN expressed frustration over the government’s inability to secure Leah’s release and that of many other women and girls still in captivity. The organization emphasized that Leah’s plight must not be forgotten and called for relentless efforts to bring her home.
Ogunlade highlighted Leah’s resilience and unwavering faith as an inspiration to young girls across Nigeria. He stated that her courage in the face of adversity should not be ignored, and her story must remain in the public consciousness.
ACCoN also urged Nigerians and the international community to keep pressure on the government to take decisive action. Ogunlade encouraged the Christian community to continue advocating and praying for Leah’s freedom.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to amplifying the voices of those in distress while promoting peace, justice, and security in Nigeria.
