Nigeria’s First Lady Pledges N1 Billion to Eradicate Tuberculosis by 2030

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged N1 billion to support the fight against tuberculosis (TB) in the country, with the goal of eradicating the disease by 2030. The announcement was made today as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s public health response and reduce TB cases nationwide.
The pledge comes amid ongoing concerns about the high burden of tuberculosis in Nigeria, which has one of the highest TB infection rates in the world. According to health officials, the country accounts for a significant percentage of global TB cases, making urgent intervention necessary. The First Lady emphasized the importance of addressing the disease through improved diagnosis, treatment, and awareness campaigns.
Senator Tinubu’s commitment is expected to provide much-needed financial support for TB prevention and treatment programs. The funds will be directed toward expanding healthcare services, purchasing medical equipment, and increasing access to life-saving medications for those affected by tuberculosis. She called on both public and private sector stakeholders to join efforts in combating the disease and ensuring that Nigeria meets its target of TB elimination by 2030.
Health experts have highlighted the challenges facing Nigeria’s TB control efforts, including limited access to healthcare facilities, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate funding. The N1 billion pledge is seen as a significant step in addressing some of these barriers, helping to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve community outreach programs.
Tuberculosis remains a major public health concern globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) identifying it as one of the leading infectious disease killers. In Nigeria, TB cases have been on the rise due to factors such as poverty, overcrowding, and limited healthcare access. The government has been working in collaboration with international partners to implement strategies aimed at reducing transmission and improving patient outcomes.
Senator Tinubu’s pledge aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include ending the TB epidemic by 2030. She urged Nigerians to take TB prevention seriously and to support government initiatives aimed at tackling the disease.
Officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Health have welcomed the pledge, noting that it will complement ongoing efforts to detect and treat TB cases more effectively. The First Lady also encouraged increased public awareness and early testing to reduce the spread of the disease.
The announcement reinforces the government’s focus on strengthening healthcare services and addressing communicable diseases. With tuberculosis remaining a significant health threat in Nigeria, the N1 billion commitment is expected to contribute to ongoing national and international efforts to combat the disease and improve overall public health outcomes.
