The All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly declared its commitment to securing victory in the 2027 governorship election in Abia State. The party made this declaration during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, the state capital, on Friday, April 12, 2025.

The meeting brought together prominent APC leaders, stakeholders, and party faithful from across the state. It was convened to assess the party’s current position in Abia and to begin mobilization ahead of the next election cycle. Speaking at the event, the National Welfare Secretary of the APC, Sir F.N. Nwosu, emphasized that the party is determined to dislodge the ruling Labour Party in the state and take over leadership in 2027.

Nwosu noted that the APC has learned valuable lessons from its performance in previous elections and is now better positioned to make a significant political impact. He stressed that unity within the party would be essential to achieving their goal. According to him, internal divisions and disorganization contributed to the APC’s inability to win the governorship in the past.

He also called on members of the party to begin grassroots mobilization, engage with communities, and build trust among the electorate. Nwosu urged stakeholders to put aside personal interests and work towards the common objective of delivering victory for the APC in the next election.

Also speaking at the gathering, Chief Ikechi Emenike, a chieftain of the APC in Abia State and the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, reiterated that the APC must not repeat past mistakes. He insisted that the party must prioritize discipline, commitment, and a clear vision for governance to gain the confidence of the people of Abia.

Emenike criticized what he described as poor governance under the current Labour Party administration in the state, asserting that the APC offers a better alternative. He claimed that the people of Abia were already disillusioned with the performance of the incumbent government and would be receptive to a credible and organized challenge in 2027.

He warned against complacency within the APC ranks and reminded members that winning an election in the state would require sustained effort, strategic planning, and strong messaging. Emenike also called for reconciliation among party members and the inclusion of all factions in the decision-making process.

Several other speakers at the event echoed similar sentiments. They emphasized the need for a united front and underscored the importance of early preparations. Some members proposed forming issue-based committees to drive the campaign and coordinate efforts in different zones of the state.

The APC leadership also discussed plans to strengthen its structures at the ward and local government levels. Attendees stressed that having a robust grassroots network would be critical in countering the influence of the ruling party and winning over undecided voters.

At the end of the meeting, a resolution was passed to set up a strategy committee tasked with identifying potential candidates, overseeing outreach initiatives, and monitoring political developments in the state. The committee will also be responsible for ensuring party cohesion and addressing grievances that may arise in the build-up to the elections.

The APC has never held the governorship seat in Abia State since the return to democracy in 1999. The state has historically been dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with the Labour Party gaining control in the 2023 elections. However, APC leaders believe the political landscape in the state is shifting and that the 2027 election presents an opportunity for the party to finally gain a foothold.

Despite optimism within the party, political analysts caution that winning Abia will not be easy. They point out that while the APC has support in some parts of the state, it must work harder to convince a majority of voters, many of whom have remained loyal to other parties over the years.

With the countdown to 2027 already underway, the APC’s declaration marks the beginning of a new phase in the state’s political contest. The coming months are expected to see increased political activities, realignments, and maneuvering as parties position themselves for what is likely to be a competitive election.
