Uganda Orders Internet Shutdown Ahead of National Elections

Uganda has ordered a nationwide internet shutdown starting Tuesday evening, two days before national elections in which President Yoweri Museveni is seeking to extend his decades-long rule.

The Uganda Communications Commission said the suspension is intended to prevent misinformation, electoral fraud, and incitement to violence during the voting period.

The shutdown will remain in effect until further notice, although essential state services will be exempted. The government has not formally commented on the decision, despite earlier public assurances that internet access would not be disrupted during the elections.

Uganda imposed a similar internet blackout during the disputed 2021 elections, which were marred by allegations of vote rigging and violence against the opposition led by Bobi Wine, who is once again challenging Museveni for the presidency.
