The national leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party has described the exit of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, as the end of an era and a significant turning point in the political history of the party. The party said the development marked the conclusion of a major phase in its evolution and signalled a period of transition.

The NNPP made this known in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday. The statement was made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday.

According to the party, it accepted Governor Yusuf’s resignation in good faith. The NNPP said his departure represented the culmination of a political chapter strongly associated with the influence of the party’s former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The statement explained that Governor Yusuf cited prolonged internal wrangling and leadership disputes within the party as the primary reasons for his decision to leave. The party acknowledged that these disputes had weakened internal cohesion, particularly within the Kano State chapter.
The NNPP leadership admitted that the internal crisis had created serious challenges for unity and effective coordination within the party. It noted that disagreements over leadership and control had strained relationships among key stakeholders over an extended period.

The party, under the leadership of its National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, described Yusuf’s resignation as the conclusion of a difficult chapter. It said the situation had tested the resilience of the party and exposed deep divisions that could no longer be ignored.

In the statement, the NNPP said it wished the Kano State governor well in his future political pursuits. The party also urged its members across the country to remain calm, focused, and committed to the broader vision of building a strong and credible political platform.

The NNPP stressed that while the exit of a sitting governor was a major political development, it would not define the future of the party. It maintained that the organisation remains committed to its founding principles and long-term objectives.

The party expressed regret over the circumstances that led to Yusuf’s departure. It described the internal conflicts that precipitated the crisis as avoidable and unfortunate, noting that they distracted the party from its core mission.
While the statement contained criticism of Senator Kwankwaso and his political group, the NNPP said it was determined to move forward without distractions. The party emphasized that it would no longer allow internal disputes to overshadow its commitment to national development and democratic ideals.

The leadership reaffirmed confidence in the party’s founding structure and historical roots. It noted that the NNPP has existed for more than 25 years and has survived numerous political challenges and transitions.

According to the party, its longevity is a testament to the strength of its ideology and organisational framework. It said the current crisis would not erase decades of political struggle and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The NNPP paid tribute to its founder, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam. The party credited him with laying a solid foundation and articulating a vision focused on national renewal, equity, and inclusive governance.

The statement said the ideals established by the party’s founder remain relevant and continue to guide its leadership. It added that the NNPP is determined to preserve that legacy while adapting to changing political realities.

Despite the political setback in Kano State, the party expressed optimism about its future. The NNPP said it is already taking steps to strengthen its internal structures and expand its presence across the country.

The leadership pledged to intensify grassroots mobilisation and rebuild confidence among members and supporters nationwide. It said efforts are underway to reposition the party ahead of future electoral contests.

The NNPP maintained that the loss of a high-profile member would not derail its plans or diminish its relevance. Instead, it said the moment would serve as an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and reorganisation.

The party also assured its members that lessons learned from the crisis would guide future decision-making. It said emphasis would be placed on internal democracy, transparency, and collective leadership.

In concluding the statement, the NNPP said it remains focused on sustained relevance beyond the 2027 general elections. The party expressed confidence that it would emerge stronger, with renewed clarity of purpose and unity.
The leadership reiterated that political transitions are part of democratic growth. It added that the NNPP remains committed to offering Nigerians an alternative political platform rooted in accountability, national unity, and progressive governance.
