The Abia State Government has announced plans to settle outstanding salary arrears owed to former Local Government Councillors who served between 1999 and 2022.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed the decision as part of the administration’s ongoing financial reforms and efforts to address long-standing liabilities inherited from previous governments.
According to the governor, the verification process has commenced to identify genuine beneficiaries and determine the actual amount owed, stressing that payment will be transparent and structured to avoid fraud.
He noted that clearing the arrears is necessary to restore confidence in government, promote fairness, and close a painful chapter that has lingered for over two decades.
The development is expected to bring relief to hundreds of affected former councillors across the 17 local government areas of the state, many of whom had repeatedly demanded payment through petitions and protests.
Government officials say modalities for disbursement will be announced after the verification exercise is concluded.
