The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been restored to its rightful owners, the people, as internal efforts to rebuild the party gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the remarks while addressing ongoing developments within the party, emphasizing that those who left the PDP while holding elective mandates should relinquish those positions. He argued that such mandates were given under the platform of the PDP and, therefore, morally belong to the party.
His comments come at a time when prominent PDP figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, are intensifying reconciliation efforts aimed at uniting party members and strengthening its chances in future elections.
Wike stressed that restoring internal discipline and accountability is critical to rebuilding trust among party loyalists. He maintained that defections by elected officials undermine the integrity of the electoral process and weaken party structures.
He further insisted that the PDP must prioritize fairness and respect for its internal rules if it hopes to regain political strength. According to him, ensuring that those who defect vacate their positions would serve as a deterrent against future political opportunism.
Meanwhile, Saraki and Lamido have been actively engaging stakeholders across different factions of the party. Their reconciliation push is focused on resolving lingering disputes and fostering unity among members who have been divided by past leadership struggles.
Both leaders have reportedly held consultations with key party figures, urging them to set aside personal differences in the interest of the PDP’s future. Their efforts are seen as part of a broader strategy to reposition the party as a strong opposition force ahead of the next election cycle.
Political observers note that internal divisions have significantly affected the PDP’s performance in recent elections. As a result, the success of the ongoing reconciliation initiative is considered crucial to the party’s prospects in 2027.
Wike’s position on defectors has, however, sparked debate within political circles. While some party members agree with his stance, others argue that legal and constitutional complexities may make it difficult to enforce such demands.
Despite differing views, there appears to be a shared recognition within the PDP of the need for unity and strategic planning. The combination of Wike’s calls for accountability and the reconciliation efforts led by Saraki and Lamido reflects a broader attempt to stabilize the party.
As discussions continue, party leaders are expected to intensify consultations and grassroots engagement in the coming months. These efforts are aimed at rebuilding confidence among supporters and presenting a united front ahead of future electoral contests.
With the 2027 elections still some years away, PDP stakeholders appear focused on addressing internal challenges early. The outcome of these reconciliation moves may ultimately shape the party’s ability to compete effectively on the national stage.
