Buhari orders inter-ministerial action to implement economic reforms policy

TRACKING___President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that an immediate inter-ministerial action plan be initiated to commence implementation of government’s economic revitalisation policy. While it was not clear if the directive came sequel to a report submitted to the President few days ago by the Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC), chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, it was gathered that government was taking practical steps towards the agenda of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, as envisaged by the present administration.

It would be recalled that the report of ESC had predicted a bleak economic future for the country, as it projected that unemployment in Nigeria may rise to 39.4 million or 33.6 per cent in December 2020. It also predicted a monthly oil revenue loss of N185 billion for the country.

The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, who presided over an inter-ministerial meeting in Abuja yesterday, said the Federal Government had perfected plans to unveil its action plan towards providing Nigeria’s teeming population with meaningful employment in line with Buhari’s policy.

The meeting had in attendance the Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Fayemi Kayode, Ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Water Resources, Environment, Industry, Trade and Investment, among others. Akume said the move was to fine tune the process of implementing Buhari’s economic empowerment policy for lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty. He said: “We are here principally on the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari and the purpose of this meeting is to look at ways of giving effects to the presidential policy of lifting 100m Nigerians out of poverty. “This is a policy initiative that cannot be carried out by only one ministry, it is inter-ministerial, and each ministry has a role to play in this enterprise. “The commitment of Mr. President is total, it legitimate and all that are supposed to key in have all keyed in.”
