The Director General of the Bayelsa State Centre for Youth Development, Comrade Robert Igali, has welcomed the arrival of the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) for the Azikel Refinery at the Onne Seaport in Rivers State, describing it as a major industrial breakthrough for Bayelsa State and the wider Niger Delta region.
Igali said the delivery of the CDU and other critical refinery components represents a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the privately-owned refinery project situated at Obunagha-Gbarain in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to him, the refinery project has continued to demonstrate the capacity of indigenous entrepreneurs to undertake projects of national importance capable of transforming the region’s economic landscape.
The youth development official, who is also a friend of the President of Azikel Group, Dr. Azibapu Eruani, noted that the Crude Distillation Unit is regarded as the core processing component of any refinery. He explained that the CDU serves as the central facility through which crude oil is processed and separated into different petroleum products during refining operations.
Igali disclosed that the equipment measures approximately 250 feet in length and weighs about 135 tonnes. He stated that the component arrived aboard a specially chartered vessel alongside several other key refinery installations needed for the completion of the project.
Among the additional components delivered were Naphtha Reactors, gasoline distillation towers, crude heaters and other essential installation equipment required for the refinery’s operational phase.
He described the arrival of the equipment as more than a routine construction development, saying it reflects the growing possibility of industrial transformation in Bayelsa State. According to him, the refinery project has become a symbol of economic potential and industrial advancement for the oil-producing region.
Igali observed that despite Bayelsa State’s longstanding contribution to Nigeria’s economy through crude oil production, the state has historically lacked major industrial infrastructure capable of driving local economic expansion and employment generation.
He stated that the Azikel Refinery project could help alter that reality by attracting investments, creating jobs and increasing Nigeria’s local refining capacity. He added that the project could also contribute to reducing dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The Bayelsa official further praised Dr. Eruani and the management of Azikel Group for sustaining the project despite challenges often associated with large-scale industrial investments in Nigeria.
He commended their resilience, commitment and long-term vision, noting that the refinery would stand as a major legacy project for indigenous enterprise and industrial development within the Niger Delta region.
According to Igali, the progress recorded so far has generated optimism among residents and stakeholders who expect the refinery to deliver socio-economic benefits upon completion and commencement of operations.
He said the movement of the refinery components from Onne Seaport to the Bayelsa project site in the coming weeks is expected to further heighten public anticipation surrounding the project.
The Azikel Refinery is considered one of the largest privately-owned refinery projects being developed in Nigeria. Industry stakeholders have continued to monitor its progress due to expectations that it could contribute significantly to domestic fuel production and strengthen the country’s refining sector.
Nigeria has for years struggled with limited local refining capacity despite being one of Africa’s largest crude oil producers. Several public and private sector investments have recently been directed toward improving refining infrastructure as part of broader efforts to enhance energy security and reduce fuel import dependence.
The arrival of the CDU and associated refinery equipment is therefore being viewed by many observers as a critical step toward bringing the Bayelsa-based refinery closer to operational readiness.
Residents and economic stakeholders in the Niger Delta are also expected to benefit from potential employment opportunities and business activities linked to the refinery’s construction and eventual operations.
With the latest delivery of key components now completed, attention is expected to shift toward installation activities and the next phases of the refinery’s development in Bayelsa State.
