The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Diaspora has strongly condemned alleged statements threatening violence against Edo State, reportedly made by former Niger Delta militant leader and traditional monarch, Asari Dokubo.

In a statement signed by Collins Osazee Idahosa, the youth body described any call for war or violence against any state, ethnic group, or community in Nigeria as reckless, dangerous, and contrary to the principles of national unity.

The council expressed concern over remarks allegedly attributed to Dokubo and emphasized that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and collective commitment to peaceful coexistence.

“NYCN Diaspora categorically condemns any call to violence against any state, ethnic group, or community in Nigeria. Edo State, like every other state in the federation, deserves respect and protection under the law,” the statement said.

The organization maintained that conflict and threats of violence have no place in a democratic society, stressing that Nigerian youths, both at home and abroad, have endured the devastating effects of insecurity and communal unrest for too long.

According to the council, dialogue, development, and nation-building should remain the focus of all stakeholders rather than inflammatory rhetoric capable of inciting tension and division.

The statement further urged public office holders, traditional leaders, and influential personalities to exercise caution in their public utterances, noting that irresponsible speech can undermine national cohesion and threaten peace.

“Public figures and citizens alike must use language that unites rather than divides. Threats of war against a state violate the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution and weaken efforts toward national integration,” the council stated.

Highlighting the historical significance of Edo State, NYCN Diaspora noted that the state has made immense contributions to Nigeria’s cultural heritage, governance, and economic development.

The council declared its solidarity with the people of Edo State and all Nigerians who reject intimidation, violence, and hate speech.

It also called on security agencies to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate actions within the confines of the law to prevent any escalation of tensions.

Beyond the immediate concerns, NYCN Diaspora urged young Nigerians across the country and in the diaspora to reject divisive narratives and instead focus on productive engagement, economic empowerment, civic participation, and advocacy for diaspora voting rights.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace and responsible leadership, the council quoted one of its guiding principles: “We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our nation to make a positive impact and be the change we want to see.”

“The change Nigeria needs begins with peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and responsible engagement by all citizens,” the statement concluded.

The statement was signed by Amb. Collins Osazee Idahosa, Governor of NYCN Europe Chapter and Vice President of NYCN Diaspora.
