Scholars of international relations and perhaps others within international development circles may be conversant with the workings of the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed, Landlocked Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), one that pays specific attention to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), being a distinct group of developing countries that face specific social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities, amongst which are Bahrain, Comoros, Guinea Bissau, Maldives, Mauritius, Haiti, Puerto Rico, amongst others.

This is the backdrop against which Hon. Preye Influence Goodluck Oseke, member representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives draw inference in mapping communities for penetrative development across the Federal Constituency, thus grouping Amatolo, Obololi, Emete and Ukparatubu in Constituencies 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively amongst few others, describing them as most desolate and hardly-thought-of.

Following last friday’s meeting between the Federal lawmaker, contractors handling various projects within the federal constituency and leadership of benefitting communities, within six days, Amatolo community has worn a new nocturnal look as celebration erupted across its length and breadth. Like new arrivals in Europes at Summer, the community remained in the streets until dawn, praying for a politician who, by reason of his disposition has earned for himself the nickname “Executive Legislator”.

In the words of His Royal Highness Orubiri Navy, Amananaowei of Amatolo – “this is history, and I’m glad to be alive to see this. Oseke has done differently. He would have concentrated on communities that could give more votes, this is representation, this is leadership.” Truly, the experience of the people of Amatolo on Thursday 10th December 2020 will remain indelible, even as it forms part of the community’s annals.

Reverberating even now are the words of the apostle of our generation, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, whose words the Executive Lawmaker has feasted on for decades, being the breeding ground for the dividends that many admire – “success is leaving the world better than one met it. Anyone can be a success when he looks out for a human need and meets it. Success is everywhere because humans have needs and they are everywhere.”
