Nine years after a tragic incident that shocked residents of Port Harcourt, three suspects — Sodienye Mbatumukeke, Excel Destiny Naabe and Joy Eluwa — have reportedly been sentenced to death by hanging for their alleged involvement in the killing of a Jumia dispatch rider over an iPhone 7.
According to reports on the case, the dispatch rider had visited an apartment along Ada George Road, Port Harcourt, to deliver an iPhone 7 that had reportedly been ordered on a pay-on-delivery basis.
What was expected to be a routine delivery allegedly turned into a deadly encounter, with the rider reportedly killed and his body disposed of in a soak-away.
Nine years later, the case has again drawn public attention following reports of the death sentence handed down to the three accused persons.
The incident has also sparked renewed conversations about the value placed on material possessions and the devastating consequences of violent crime.
The phone at the centre of the tragedy was an iPhone 7, a device that has long since become obsolete as Apple has released several newer generations of the iPhone.
