Soyinka Denies Supporting Agitation For Yoruba Nation
Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has denied supporting the agitation for Yoruba state
He made this known in a statement on Thursday by his media aide, Abiola Owoaje, titled: “Circulation of misinformation associating Professor Wole Soyinka with the agitation for a Yoruba State”.
Soyinka also denounced a social media post attributed to him in which he showed support for the agitation of Oduduwa Republic.
The Nobel laureate urged the public to disregard the information, adding that any views he wishes to express on national and other issues routinely go through the print media.
The statement reads: “Professor Wole Soyinka wishes to denounce the fake WhatsApp posting on the Yoruba state agitation being attributed to him.
“Once again, he requests the public to ignore the utterances of those contemptible interlopers who lack the courage of their conviction and thus take to identity theft for the furtherance of their views.
“For a start, Wole Soyinka does not participate in Facebook, Tweet, Blog, WhatsApp or other offerings of the social media. Any views that he wishes to express on national and other issues routinely go through the print media.”
Meanwhile, popular Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has urged the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to support a factional bandits group to stop mass abductions of school pupils.
He stated this on Wednesday while reacting to the abduction of 200 Islamiyya schoolchildren in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
Gumi told The PUNCH that many bandits were ready for a dialogue, adding that government could use them to fight the “ugly ones.”
“We are always trying to do our best, but you see, you need two hands to shake. You know these people (bandits) need engagements from the government itself. If you dialogue with them without the involvement of the government, it is a problem,” Gumi said.
“Government needs to be proactive with them. We have a lot of them that are ready to fight the bad ones. Use the bad to fight the ugly, and use the good to fight the bad ones when you’re done with the ugly. Look at Boko Haram, who finished Shekau? Was it not the splinter group? So, it is easy.
“All these agitations you see, if the government can do a splinter group and the splinter group is empowered, every man wants power and money, they will do your job. There are many ready to submit themselves. All the ones you see me meeting in the bush, they are all telling us, ‘we are ready.’”
