A human rights advocacy group, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called on the management of University of Port Harcourt to properly investigate the case of assault involving a lecturer and female student in the university.

The Management of the school had in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Sam Kpenu said a case of assault was reported by a lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures against a female student in the same department of the university.

However, other reports indicate that a UNIPORT lecturer was beaten after his encounter with a female student and allegedly reported to the senate that he was kidnapped.

But the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign in a statement by its National Coordinator, Prince Wiro, said the university should give fair hearing to parties involved in the matter as some other report from course mates of the female student who spoke to them alleged that the lecturer was beaten when he attempted to sexually assault the female student in her off campus room at Aluu during a visit.

The organization urged the university to ensure the witnesses of the lecturer and the female student are considered and allowed to make voluntary statements at the panel investigating the matter, stating that it believes in the capacity of the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill to ensure justice to the parties involved.
