Sanwo-Olu names Gbagada Housing Estate after Ndubuisi Kanu
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has renamed one of the housing estates in Gbagada as ‘Ndubuisi Kanu Housing Estate’ to immortalise the late Governor.
Sanwo-Olu, who was full of kudos for the deceased, said he led a remarkable life worthy of emulation.
He added that the estate will be commissioned soon.
The Governor spoke at a ‘Day of Tributes’ held in Kanu’s honour by the State.
He said: “The late Admiral Kanu, a tested nationalist, lived his life for the good of the people. He loved the people and was always willing to make them happy.
“He was a dependable and trustworthy comrade who he lived a contented life, devoid of avarice and unbridled pursuit of personal wealth.
“He loathed injustice as a plague. A pro-democracy activist, he detested oppression and was at the forefront of the battle against military dictatorship between 1993 and 1999.”
Former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu, Commodore Ubitu Ukiwe (rtd); Chief Ayo Opadokun, among others, also described late Kanu as a great nationalist and an icon of all time.
The late Kanu, a former Military Governor of Lagos, died on January 13 at 78.
Tinubu, who was represented by former Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, described the deceased as a democrat of note and a true leader.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former military administrator of Lagos and Imo states, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu.
“He was my brother and a very courageous partner in the struggle for democracy and enthronement of true federalism in Nigeria.
“In everything he did, from his work as former administrator of Lagos State to the sacrifices he made to help NADECO during the struggle for the actualisation of June 12, Admiral Kanu was highly principled.
“He provided democratic vision and meaningful ideas to advance historic struggle. He was a patriot and a progressive; a rare breed in his consistent and unwavering commitment to social justice, democracy and workable federalism in Nigeria, Admiral Kanu was a Lagosian, true Nigeria nationalist in the very true sense of that phrase…’
Opadokun described the deceased as disciplined, detribalised, patriotic, who lived a fulfilled life and should be celebrated.
He was certain Kanu’s legacies will outlive him
