South Africa: Fight Between Black & White Students Leads To Street Fires

In South Africa, parents of students gathered outside a high school near Johannesburg to denounce alleged acts of racism.
On Monday, in front of the Hoërskool Jan Viljoen high school in Randfontein, the police tried to disperse the crowd. The protest came days after a fight broke out at the school on Friday over the use of an offensive term by a white student to a black student.
“We cannot! It’s 2022 and a black child still being called a Kaffer (a derogatory word used to refer to a black person, ed.). That is unacceptable”, explained Winnie Masike, a parent.
“Violence in schools must end, racism must end, it must end.” added _Lerato Tapadisa, a resident of Mohlakeng-Randfontein township.
Witnesses reported that South African police dispersed students inside the school using water cannons.
Many representatives of political parties like the EFF and the ANC, as well as the civil rights organization AfriForum, were also present in the ranks of the demonstrators.
The management team (SMT) and the school’s governing body (SGB) told local media that they deplored the behaviour of the individuals involved in Friday’s incident.
The establishment is currently in the process of carrying out an investigation into the altercation on Friday and its origins specified that the culprits will be punished in accordance with the law on schools and the code of conduct of the high school Hoërskool.
