Kenyatta Endorses Former Rival Odinga For President
President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has backed Raila Odinga, a former opponent, as a presidential candidate in this year’s elections.
The president, who cannot seek re-election since he has already served two terms, told a gathering of tens of thousands in Nairobi’s capital that he had no question that Odinga was the team’s captain.
Recall that the ruling Jubilee party joined a coalition led by Odinga last month.
Following fatal post-election violence, Kenyatta and r Odinga proclaimed a truce in 2018.
Raila Odinga is a Kenyan politician and businessman who served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. He has been the Leader of Opposition in Kenya since 2013. He was the Member of Parliament for Langata from 1992 to 2007.
It is pertinent to mention that both political juggernauts were born to fathers who played a key role in Kenya’s struggle for independence.
Jomo Kenyatta and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga teamed together to fight British supremacy, but after Kenya gained independence in 1963, they formed a bitter rivalry.
Between 1964 through 1966, when Kenyatta was president, Odinga served as the country’s first vice-president.
However, they differed on foreign policy, with Kenyatta forging relationships with the West and Odinga gravitating toward the socialist ideologies of the former Soviet Union.
