2023: Ikpeazu, Ortom And Other PDP Governors Who Have Clinched Senatorial Tickets
Some sitting governors governing on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have clinched the party’s senatorial tickets ahead of the 2023 general election.
It is no longer news that most governors love to retire to the National Assembly as senators after serving out their second term, and this is no exception to serving governors in the major opposition party.
TrackNews understands that the opposition party has conducted its legislative primary elections across the country, and results have started trickling in.
Below is a list of PDP governors who have clinched senatorial tickets.
Samuel Ortom
The Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom clinched the PDP ticket to contest for a seat in the Senate on Monday, 23 May.
He will fly the PDP flag in the Benue north-west senatorial district election in 2023.
He was first elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in 2015 but was re-elected in 2019 on the PDP platform.
Okezie Ikpeazu
The Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu also contested and won the senatorial seat for Abia South district following his triumph at the primary election of the PDP held across the state.
Ikpeazu was said to have no challenger for the senatorial ticket hence he was returned unopposed.
Ibrahim Dankwambo
The former governor of Gombe state contest and won the ticket to represent the PDP in the Gombe North senatorial district poll in the 2023 elections.
According to reports, Dankwambo emerged the winner of the exercise after Bayero Nafada, a former deputy speaker of the house of representatives, and Hamma Saleh withdrew from the race.
Darius Ishaku
Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State also secured the PDP ticket to contest the Taraba South Senatorial District election.
If he wins the election, Ishaku will join the league of governors who moved into the National Assembly at the end of eight years as Chief Executive Officers of their states.
Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi
The Enugu State clinched the PDP ticket for the Enugu North Senatorial District.
Ugwuanyi, who will complete his governorship tenure in May 2023, wants to replace Senator Chukwuka Utazi, who is currently representing the district.
Before he became governor in 2015, he had served for 12 years in the House of Representatives as a member representing Udenu/Igbo-Eze North Federal Constituency.
