Nine days into the Federal Government’s contract-driven electricity market, which began on July 1, power supply through the national grid has averaged 3,773.72 Mega Watts at peak generation, falling short of the government’s target of 5,505MW, Track News reports
The federal government had activated a partial Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with generation companies (GenCos) for the supply of 5,505MW at peak generation and 4,893MW at base load.
However, Vanguard’s analysis of data released by the National System Operator, NSO, a unit of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, on the first nine days of July revealed that the market generated more than 4,000MW only once, on Friday, July 8, when 4,102.70MW was recorded.
The market failed to meet the 4,893MW target for base load, which is the minimum generation requirement, on any of the days. Checks revealed that the lowest base load generation of 2,998.8MW occurred on Sunday, July 3, while the highest base load generation of 3,614MW occurred on Friday, July 7.
Data on hourly generation showed that as of 3 p.m. yesterday, 22 power plants were connected to the grid, with a total capacity of 3,704.20MW. Egbin Power, Nigeria’s largest plant, led the generation chart with 540MW, followed by Azura-Edo (414MW) and Shiroro Hydro (409MW).
Henrietta Ighomrore, Head Corporate Communication, Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, NBET, told Vanguard at the start of the policy that the agreement was good for the sector because everyone is now aware of what is expected of each operator.
Ighomrore stated that with the agreement, NERC has challenged each operator to perform at a certain level in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
“The goal of the entire process is to optimize the generation portfolio and ensure system efficiency.” This ensures that all value chain participants are committed to improving performance and meeting the goals set. The Regulator has facilitated this process in order to ensure continuous generation within the network.”
