Get licensed guns and protect yourself, says Nigerian archbishop on Insecurity

By Adeleye Kunle
THE Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province and Anglican Bishop of Akure Diocese, Rev. Simeon Borokini, urged Nigerians over the weekend to obtain licensed firearms in order to protect themselves from the country’s ravaging bandits, Track News reports.
Borokini spoke at St. Andrews Anglican Church in Oyemekun, Akure, Ondo State, during the Synod.
While expressing concern about the country’s deteriorating security, the cleric advised members of his church to be prepared to defend themselves against attackers.
He noted that safety has become a top priority for worshippers, necessitating the need for churches to protect and defend themselves.
“Well, I won’t oppose the call for churches to defend themselves because the government appears to be insensitive to the country’s security situation,” he says. So, anyone who wants to get something to protect himself should get it licensed, especially if it is a gun. If it is to protect, I will support it because the government appears to be negligent in terms of security.
“The government’s promises to protect citizens from terrorists and criminals have not been fulfilled; instead, the country has become more unstable than it has been in decades.”
“Across the country, the recent surge in insecurity has been linked to poverty.”
“The country is abundantly blessed, but youth unemployment is concerning, and the country is in the midst of one of the economic downturns.”
“Nigeria, God’s own country, the African giant, a land flowing with milk and honey, is now a place where no one wants to partner with or even come to invest in.”
“As a result of the security challenges, citizens are fleeing the country in search of greener pastures and solace elsewhere.”
“The country is facing an unprecedented wave of different but overlapping insurgencies, and violence and crime have reached almost every corner.”
