How 33,000-liter fuel tanker crashed in Lagos
By Adeleye Kunle
A major fire outbreak was averted on Tuesday in Costain, Lagos, after a fuel-laden tanker crashed while ascending a bridge.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m., causing the tanker’s contents to spill. However, it was quickly addressed by emergency personnel.
When the tanker crashed, it was ascending the Costain Bridge inward Iponri, Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere. It was said to have collided with a car before tumbling and spilling its contents. However, no one was hurt in the incident.
Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and Mrs. Adeseye Margaret, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, both confirmed the incident.
Adeseye stated that firefighters were on the scene mitigating the situation, ensuring public safety, and relying on public support to remove combustible materials from the area.
The Permanent Secretary provided an update on the incident, saying, “Upon arrival at the scene, LRT discovered a fallen tanker laden with 33,000 litres of PMS.”
“Investigations revealed that the tanker rolled back while ascending the bridge, colliding with a car, then tumbling and spilling its contents.”
“On the ground, the LRT worked alongside LASTMA, police, state and federal fire departments, and other first responders.”
“Firefighters are blanketing the spilled contents, and adequate safety measures have been put in place to prevent fire ignition.”
“Trans-loading of the product into another tanker is ongoing,” he said at 4.45 p.m.
“The general public is asked to avoid the area and refrain from scooping product.”
“Until the situation is fully contained, residents should avoid lighting any naked flame.”
