While confirming the report, military sources said the operation was coordinated in response to credible intelligence reports that a large number of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters had converged in the area in preparation for a new attack in some areas.

According to reports, Alhaji Modu was the mastermind behind the 2014 displacement of Bama town, killing hundreds of innocent citizens before declaring it a Boko Haram caliphate. According to reports, the now-deceased terrorists’ leader was overseen by Ali Ngoshe, a top Boko Haram leader, and the two hibernate inside Mandara mountain caves from which they coordinate attacks in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger Republic.
