At Least 25 perish in multiple crashes at a military checkpoint in Enugu
Not less than 25 people met their untimely death on Wednesday in Enugu when a truck rammed into cars stopped by soldiers at a military checkpoint along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Residents of Enugu and the entire South East have persistently complained about the preponderance of police and military checkpoints in the area, which they likened to an occupation.
Wednesday’s accident which involved 10 vehicles both private and commercial buses was caused by an army checkpoint, witnesses said.
While 25 died, many others were said to have be seriously injured and are currently being taken to hospitals in and around the state capital.

According to an eyewitnesses, a truck failed break and overran so many vehicles that were stopped at the hilly road, killing so many people.
“A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed break and smashed more than 10 cars both private cars and commercial buses. The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives.
“More than 25 persons lost their life instantly and many rushed to the hospital,” one of the eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters.
A video captured by witnesses show bodies of victims scattered on the road.
Some vehicles including a petrol tanker truck were seen plunged into a nearby ditch. Some cars were seen smashed beyond recognition.
Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State police police relations officer, had not responded to Business Hallmark inquiries on the details of the incident at the time of writing.
