The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has advocated for greater collaboration between the governments of the United Kingdom and Nigeria in finding solutions to issues that benefit both countries.

Atiku, Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, made the proposal yesterday at his Abuja residence during a meeting with a delegation from the British High Commission led by High Catriona Laing.

Atiku and his guests discussed a variety of topics, including security, education, agriculture, the economy, and fostering Nigerian national unity.

According to the High Commissioner, the meeting with the former Vice President was part of the UK government’s ongoing efforts to improve democracy and credibility in Nigeria.

In response, Atiku expressed gratitude to the delegation for making the time to meet with him, noting that “the bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom have a rich history, and it is important for both countries to leverage on that to promote issues of mutual concern.”

“On the issue of insecurity, he bemoaned the country’s plight and requested UK assistance, particularly in the areas of training and intelligence sharing.”

“On the economy, the former Vice President stated that if given the chance to lead Nigeria, he would, among other things, abolish multiple exchange rate regimes and reduce taxes to encourage genuine manufacturers and real investments.” He also promised to expand agriculture to help the country’s overburdened population.
