Atiku’s Camp Speaks on Report That Buhari’s Nephew Approved Naira Redesign
The camp of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, has reacted to the report suggesting that it was not ex-President Muhammadu Buhari but his nephew, Sabiu Tunde ‘Yusuf,’ who approved the redesign of the naira.
Daniel Bwala, a PDP chieftain and spokesperson for Atiku during the elections, expressed dismay, stating, “It is shocking and regrettable that the special investigator, in his alleged report, is attempting to exonerate Muhammad Buhari by saying that it was not PMB who authorised the naira redesign but his nephew.”
Bwala raised questions, demanding clarity on the nephew’s official status, the authority granting approval, the president in office at the time, the accountability of the CBN governor, and ultimately, where the responsibility lies.
“Meanwhile Emefiele is in custody, the nephew of PMB and PMB are free somewhere. The rule of law dictates that nobody is above the law; and everyone is equal before it,” Bwala stated.
The remarks came in response to the findings of Special Investigator Jim Obazee, tasked with investigating the Central Bank of Nigeria and related entities. Obazee’s final report, titled ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable Offences),’ was reportedly submitted to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.
It’s worth noting that Tinubu appointed Obazee, a former Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, as the CBN special investigator in a letter dated July 28, 2023.
